Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids
So you have heard of bioflavonoids, but what are they and what do they do?
Bioflavonoids are the water-soluble companions of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and are made up of a group of plant pigments that are largely responsible for the colors of many fruits and flowers. They are flavonoids with biologically active nutrients, often referred to as Vitamin P, although, technically, they are not a vitamin. These nutrients aren't manufactured by the body and must be derived from the diet.
Most noted for their antioxidant properties, bioflavonoids offer health promoting and therapeutic benefits. Along with their significant anti-inflammatory properties, the other health-promoting benefits of bioflavonoids include improved cardiovascular health, increased capillary strength, improved connective tissue structure and essential immune maintenance. Because of their ability to assist in relaxing the muscles in the cardiovascular system, it is possible that bioflavonoids can play a role in blood pressure regulation.*
There are more than 4,000 different flavonoid compounds and they are found in a wide variety of plants. The highest concentrations can be found in the white material just beneath the citrus peel, as well as, in peppers, grapes, pine bark, onions, garlic, blue and red berries, green tea and buckwheat.
Some of the common bioflavonoids include:
Quercetin - most abundant in apricots, buckwheat, cherries, prunes, rose hips, the whitish rind of citrus fruits, and the core of green peppers. Quercetin may provide relief from common allergies and inflammation and may assist in maintaining healthy eyes and lungs.*
Grape Seed Extract - an extract from grape seeds which can have beneficial effects on the circulatory system. The seeds are typically from red (instead of white) grapes, which have a high content of compounds known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). This extract may promote cardiovascular, ocular and connective tissue health.*
Catechins - abundant in the tea-plant and in chocolate (made from the seeds of Theobroma cacao). Plays a role in the cardiovascular health.*
Rutin - most abundant in apricots, buckwheat, cherries, prunes, rose hips, the whitish rind of citrus fruits, and the core of green peppers. Rutin contains approximately 50% of quercetin, and offer a synergistic effect when taken with vitamin C. Rutin may assist in the strengthening of capillary walls and the treatment of bleeding gums.*
The relationship with Vitamin C
Bioflavonoids are considered a factor in enhancing the absorption of Vitamin C, and quite possibly serve to prolong its effectiveness. Functioning as an antioxidant, bioflavonoids not only protect vitamin C from oxidation, they also function in increasing capillary strength and providing a defense against infection.* These are super active substances that can add a great deal to your nutritional needs.
Research has shown that vitamin C, in conjunction with bioflavonoids -- may help to put the brakes on both natural and free radical-induced aging of the skin. Consequently, the skin will retain a more youthful looking appearance as we age.*
